THE PRINCE DIDN’T SPEAK to Elora as they traveled through the halls. It was a stark contrast to how he had gazed at her in the entrance hall. Now, he wore a stoic mask that didn’t hint at cracking.

When they reached the armory, he pulled the vine to open the stone door without acknowledging her presence. Inside the octagonal room, the wolf tilted his head to the side while his ears twitched.

Brannick gazed at her again with that same strange intensity that twisted her chest in knots. He rubbed a hand over his wolf’s neck as his eyes narrowed. “You actually do know how to play the harp?”

It felt good to be the one smirking. “You thought I was lying?”

He shrugged. “Lying is a uniquely mortal trait.”

Her eyes narrowed. “Wait, so did Lyren and Quintus not believe I could play the harp either? Is that why they were acting so strange?”

The slightest flex went through the prince’s jaw before he answered. “They suspect you are here in Bitter Thorn for another reason. But now that they have heard your music, they will be less suspicious.” He eyed her more closely than ever. “I still do not understand. You are a master of swords. How do you also know how to play the harp?”

She wanted to roll her eyes but managed to suppress it. “I’m cultured.”

Blaz tilted his wolf head at the exact same moment Brannick did. They wore the same half-open mouth paired with scrunched up eyes. They looked supremely confused, as only a Bitter Thorn prince and his wolf could.

A sigh escaped her lips. “My father taught me sword fighting. My mother taught me to play the harp.” She shook her head as an even more important thought took over. “Wait, a uniquely mortal trait? You mean fae can’t lie?”

He waved the question off before his face grew serious again. “Lyren is right. Faerie will be more dangerous for you now that others know you have skill. Some fae collect skilled mortals and treat them…”

Blaz tensed, showing a bit of his teeth as he glared across the room at nothing in particular. The action almost stole her attention completely, but an even smaller action managed to catch her eye. Brannick’s fingers twitched at his side, almost as if he wanted to curl his fist but controlled the impulse.

Her eyes went from Blaz then to Brannick and back again. Their emotions and reactions were always so in sync. Did they share a connection? Or perhaps Blaz had just been around the prince so long that they thought the same things about people.

After clearing his throat, the prince gestured toward the back wall that hid the stone compartment with her sword. A hand wave from the prince opened the compartment. He allowed her to retrieve her sword and then pulled out a second sword hidden inside. “Does this one meet your standards?”

For a moment, Faerie stopped existing. She closed her eyes as she balanced the sword and ran a finger over the blunt side of the blade.
